
7 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep While Camping
Many people enjoy camping for the opportunity to get away from it all and experience nature first hand. However, one common problem involves how to get a good night’s sleep when camping. Use the tips below on how to sleep well while camping so you can wake up refreshed and ready for whatever tomorrow might bring.
1.) Be mindful of where you set up camp as its location can affect how well you sleep. For example, the sounds of traffic and other people that are nearby may keep you up or make it difficult to fall asleep. Think about how much shade is nearby and what direction it’s coming from before setting up camp since this can drastically impact the temperature at night.
You’ll also want to be sure to find a level spot with as few rocks and bumps as possible. This is true whether you’re camping in a tent or motorhome. Otherwise, you may find yourself tossing and turning all night long, or worse, rolling out of bed due to the slope.
2.) If you’re camping in a tent, make sure to sleep on an air mattress or a sleeping pad for comfort and protection from the ground. Motorhome mattresses are usually comfortable, but it doesn’t hurt to bring along an extra pad just in case. In both cases, bring your favorite pillow from home.
3.) Bring an extra blanket or two. This is especially important if you’re camping in cold weather, but even during the summer, the air can get chilly at night. Bringing blankets also means that it will be easier for your kids and pets to stay nice and cozy.
4.) Eat dinner early so your food has time to digest before bedtime. Although it is tempting to have a late dinner while camping, eating too close to bedtime can lead to heartburn and other uncomfortable digestion issues. In addition, caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks should be avoided at least six hours before bedtime if you want the best chance of getting quality sleep.
5.) Be aware of snoring. If you’re sensitive to your partner’s snoring, or if other people will be sleeping in the same area, make sure to bring ear plugs. This way, you’ll still be able to enjoy a good night’s sleep with little disruption from the noise around you.
6.) Make sure to keep the area around your tent clear, and follow all of the campground’s rules regarding food and trash storage. This will help prevent any unwanted pests from spoiling your night’s sleep, while also helping you avoid tripping over things during the dark hours.
7.) Bring a battery-powered fan. If you’re camping in the summer, this can be used to keep cool and create white noise that blocks out any nearby sounds.
