List For Camping Essentials: Discover 13 MUST HAVES
Heading out into the wild for a weekend or longer on your next camping trip? Wondering what you’ll need for basic survival and comfort? Putting together the right gear for a getaway with family or friends may take time, but it doesn’t have to be difficult with our list for camping essentials.
Consider the following must-have gear before you pack up the car and head into the wilderness:
Tent
A tent is a must-have for any camping trip. It provides shelter from the weather (sun, wind, rain), and it’s an invaluable place to store gear. A lightweight tent with room to spare is highly recommended. You’ll probably want a model that includes a rainfly, so you can stay dry if it rains. Make sure the tent you choose is rated for the weather you expect to encounter during your trip.
Sleeping bag
You’ll need a warm sleeping bag for your trip as well. Choose a bag with an appropriate temperature rating, and make sure it’s large enough to accommodate you comfortably.
Sleeping pad or mattress
Sleeping pads or air mattresses are necessary for comfort. You can choose from several types of mattresses, including closed-cell foam pads, self-inflating pads, or inflatable air beds. A traditional airbed mattress will provide sufficient support, but you may prefer a pad instead.
Flashlight
A flashlight will come in handy when doing any camping chores after dark, like checking the tent for damage or tightening the zip ties on your sleeping bag zippers. Choose a flashlight with multiple modes to suit the situation–a torch can be useful in camp after dark, and a reading light can be very handy at the campsite before bedtime.
Camp stove and fuel
A small camp stove is needed to prepare food if you’re car camping. The stove provides a more convenient way to cook than preparing a meal over the open flame of a fire. Choose a stove that burns fuel efficiently and cleanly, and take along extra fuel if you plan to cook for several days.
Trash bags
A small trash bag should be included in your camping gear to carry out the trash produced by meals and miscellaneous garbage. Check with the park about their recommendations for proper disposal.
Knife/multi-tool or sharp utensil
A small knife or multi-tool is a necessity for any camping trip. It’s helpful to have one with several tools at your disposal, like a blade, can opener, bottle opener, and screwdriver.
Water bottle
You’ll need a water bottle to keep in your tent, and you’ll often need it for trips outside. You can use a plastic water bottle or a refillable Nalgene water bottle.
Batteries
For flashlights or lanterns, batteries are essential. Bring along extra batteries in case you run out of power during your trip.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a great idea no matter where you’re headed, since they protect your eyes from UV rays. Whether you’re driving up to the mountains or backpacking through a forest, sunglasses will help your eyes stay healthy and alert.
Hat or visor
A hat or visor will protect your head from the sun, which can help avoid heat exhaustion. Make sure your hat fits securely and feels comfortable. A wide brim will provide more shade, and a lightweight hat will be easier to carry.
Sunscreen
You’ll need sunscreen on your face, hands, and exposed skin to avoid sunburns during your trip. Choose a formula free of harsh chemicals, which can lead to skin irritation. Apply sunscreen before going outdoors or when you first get up in the morning.
First-aid kit
A first-aid kit will include several medicines and supplies needed for minor medical emergencies, such as splinters or cuts. Make sure the kit you bring is large enough to accommodate what you need for your trip.
Compass or map
A compass or map will allow you to find your way out of camp if you get lost. You should also have an emergency whistle and matches on hand as well. If you’re camping near water, a waterproof container is helpful for keeping essential items dry in the event of rain.
While there are many more items you could add to your camping trip, these essentials should get you started. You can lighten your gear by selecting what’s most important for you to bring, and you can switch out certain items or add others based on your preferences. With a little planning, you should be able to enjoy the great outdoors without spending a lot of time or money gathering your gear.
